Biography of Sheikh Mohammed Aminu Gariba (1956 - 2024)
Sheikh Mohammed Aminu Gariba, affectionately known as Mallam Amin, was born in 1956 into a prestigious family of Islamic scholars in Tamale, Ghana. He was the son of Sheikh Alhaj Abubakar Gariba, the revered founder of Adabiya Garibiya Islamic School, which was among the very first Arabic schools established in Northern Ghana. From a young age, Sheikh Mohammed Amin was immersed in Islamic studies, receiving his early education under the tutelage of his father and other prominent scholars from the region. His early intellectual brilliance and strong spiritual foundation made it clear that he was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps as a leader and educator.
Mallam Amin took on significant responsibilities after the passing of his father in 1979, at the age of 23. Stepping into his father’s role as the head of Adabiya Garibiya Islamic School, he was determined to honor and preserve the legacy of Islamic scholarship that his father had built. His youthful energy and dedication were evident, as he worked tirelessly to expand the school, improving both its curriculum and infrastructure, while also maintaining the strict academic and spiritual standards that had become synonymous with Adabiya. He was instrumental in shaping the next generation of Islamic scholars, imams, and community leaders, many of whom continue to play influential roles across Ghana and West Africa.
Mallam Amin was not just a scholar but also a compassionate mentor and a generous benefactor. His reputation for generosity was unparalleled, and he became widely known for his dedication to charitable work. He provided food, financial assistance, and education to the less fortunate, often at great personal cost. His home and office were always open to those in need, and his kindness extended to people of all backgrounds, earning him the love and respect of the wider community.
